Our History
About us
We are located in Shell Street, Stornoway, the main town on the Isle of Lewis.
Stornoway is a sheltered natural harbour, which is the reason for the town's existence and was named Steering Bay by the visiting Vikings, which, when phonetically translated became the name Stornoway.
During the 1850s, Stornoway was the centre of the herring industry and recognised as the major herring port in Britain, if not Europe.
The Stornoway kippering industry was an important element to the town's economy. Cargo boats would sail away, on a daily basis with tens of thousands of boxes of 'Stornoway kippers', the quality of which earned the product a cachet which was recognised the world over.
When the Stornoway town council decided to design a burgh coat of arms, they made sure to include in the armorial bearing, three herring and the motto 'God's providence is our inheritance' in recognition of the vital role played by the herring in the island's economic development.
Stornoway Fish Smokers is the last traditional Smoke House left in Stornoway and the Outer Hebrides and is still producing Stornoway kippers and Stornoway smoked salmon in the old style.
As a company we have a policy of not entering competitions believing our customers to be the best judges. However, another smoked salmon business for whom we do all the smoking have this year received awards at the highest level which pleases us.
