Shell Street, Stornoway

Located in Shell Street, Stornoway, the old centre of the herring industry, Stornoway Fish Smokers is the last of the traditional kippering houses on the island and one of the few remaining on the west coast of Scotland.

The Beginning

Production of the famous Stornoway kippers declined from it's peak at the end of the 1800's until 1999 when it crashed altogether with the closure of Colin MacDonald and Sons. This old established business was purchased in Jan 2003 by Alasdair Fraser, a fish farmer from Tolsta Chaolais and Richard Knight Carloway, a salmon smoker with 25 years experience.

Renovation & Expansion

The premises were wholly renovated and on 15 July 2003 Stornoway kippers produced in the old way were once again available to the people of Lewis and beyond. Tradition was brought back to life, bringing you the best smoked salmon, shellfish and kippers.

Over the next year other smoked delicacies were developed and introduced to compliment the widest product range from the islands including Smoked Fish, smoked salmon and smoked shellfish.
